About Us

Phil Friedman is a lifelong Southern California sportfishing veteran, outdoorsman, educator, and media pioneer whose deep roots in the water began at the tender age of 12, when he started as a pinhead (entry-level deckhand) aboard the iconic Redondo Special out of Redondo Beach, California. This early hands-on experience on the half-day boats sparked a passion that has defined his entire career.
Over the following years, Phil honed his skills and worked on some of the most legendary sportfishing vessels in the region, including the Grande, Queen of the Sea, Freedom, Toronado, Mascot IV (Mascot Four), Searcher, and Pursuit. These boats took him across the Santa Monica Bay, offshore islands, and beyond, building his expertise in chasing everything from local calico bass and sand bass to pelagics like yellowtail and tuna.
Phil also ventured into commercial fishing, captaining the Thunder Fish out of Redondo Beach for two full seasons, gaining invaluable knowledge of the ocean’s rhythms, weather patterns, and the hard work behind every catch.
This foundational experience on the docks and decks of Redondo Beach laid the groundwork for his later innovations, including launching 976-TUNA in 1985 — the groundbreaking fishing information service that revolutionized how Southern California anglers got real-time reports. From those early days scrubbing decks and rigging lines as a kid, Phil’s journey has evolved into hosting Friedman Adventures, a thriving platform (with over 100,000 followers across YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Apple Podcasts, and Spotify) where he shares daily fishing intel, adventures, food, travel, and his commitment to getting people — especially youth and underserved communities — out on the water.
Phil’s sportfishing bio is a testament to starting young, working hard, and giving back: from pinhead to pioneer, his love for the ocean has touched countless lives through education, charity trips, and inspiring stories from the helm. 🎣⚓ #FriedmanAdventures #SoCalFishingLegend #StartYoungStayHooked
