Casting Safety

A great cast is smooth, aimed, and safe. Before you swing a rod, your job is to know exactly what is around you.

Ask an Adult

Always fish with a grown-up. Ask before touching a fish, tying on a hook, or trying something new.

Look behind you every single time

The most common casting accident is hooking someone standing behind you. Turn your head and check before every cast — even if you just checked a second ago.

Give people space

Stay at least two full rod lengths away from other anglers. If a spot is crowded, ask an adult to help you find a safer place to cast from.

Smooth beats hard

Wild, whip-like casts are how tackle goes flying. A calm, smooth cast goes farther and is way safer.

Load the rod slowly.
Stop the rod tip up high.
Let the weight of the lure do the work.
