Each spot has its own fish, gear, and safety tips.

Scout every new spot with an adult first. Waves, currents, and slippery rocks are different at every location.

Beginner tips:
  • Cast past the first wave.
  • Fish moving water and troughs.
Common fish: Croaker, Halibut, Spanish Mackerel
Good baits: Sand flea, Shrimp, Cut bait
Look for: Birds diving, Bait flipping, Deeper troughs

  • Watch big waves.
  • Never turn your back on the ocean.

Pier

A long walkway over the ocean.

Beginner tips:
  • Try different depths.
  • Fish the shady side.
Common fish: Bonito, Mackerel, Sheepshead
Good baits: Shrimp, Squid, Lure
Look for: Pilings, Bird activity, Bait schools
🛟 Safety:
  • Watch other anglers before casting.
  • Do not lean over the rail.

Dock

Calm water around boats and pilings.

Beginner tips:
  • Drop straight down along pilings.
  • Use small hooks and light line.
Common fish: Sheepshead, Croaker, Small snapper
Good baits: Shrimp, Small pieces of squid
Look for: Shady pilings, Moving water, Bait balls

  • Fish the corners and current edges.
  • Bring a long rod.
