Hooks are sharp on purpose — that is how they catch fish. Handled the wrong way, they can catch you too. A little care keeps every trip fun.

Ask an Adult

Always fish with a grown-up. Ask before touching a fish, tying on a hook, or trying something new.

Carry hooks the smart way

When you walk with a rigged rod, point the hook down toward the ground or press it into the cork of the rod handle. That way, if you trip, the hook is not near your face or hands.

Use pliers, not fingers

To take a hook out of a fish, use long-nose pliers. Fingers slip on wet fish, and that is how hooks end up in skin.

Grab the hook by the bend, not the point.
Back the hook out the same way it went in.
If it is buried deep, stop and ask an adult.

When you pass a rod to someone, point the tip up and the hook away from them. When you set the rod down, tuck the hook into a rod holder or a piece of cork.
