First Striper! Justin Wyndham’s Once-in-a-Lifetime Catch at the Seal Beach Grunion Run
When the grunion hit the beach, the predators are never far behind. Justin Wyndham from Lakewood just proved it.
Friday night Justin and his wife Jennifer went to Seal Beach to watch the grunion run. He tossed a rod in the car with a Shimano stickbait on 20-pound fluoro — just in case. They spent the night watching the run and he never even made a cast because he didn’t want to spook the scouts.
Around 11:30 the crowd started leaving. Jennifer told him to make a few casts before they headed home. Twenty minutes later, throwing into the dark, he thought he was hooked into a bat ray. Two or three good runs later he had a fish he never expected: a beautiful striped bass. His first one ever.
Jennifer had actually dozed off on the sand after she told him to go fish. He called her name three times after he hooked up. She ran over and started filming.
The stickbait was new to him. Carlos Mosquera told him to try one, and Nick at Young’s Tackle in Bellflower picked the color. That’s a great shop — if you’re in the area, stop in and tell Nick that stickbait paid off.
This is what I love about our beaches. You go to watch one thing and the ocean hands you something else. Congrats Justin and Jennifer. That’s a catch you’ll talk about for a long time.
