Celebrating John Talsky

Legacy of Kindness: Celebrating John Talsky

John Talsky was a remarkable man and one of the most giving souls I have ever known. For more than a decade, he poured his heart into projects that changed lives, always with that quiet, steady kindness that defined him.

Together with our dear friend Don Ashley from Pierpoint Landing in Long Beach and a wonderful group of volunteers, John and I organized fishing trips for the children of Catalina Island's service workers. These kids rarely had the chance to go fishing because their families simply couldn't afford it.

We would load the sportfishing boat Toronado with excited young faces, and John would join us on the water. We ran two groups each time, creating pure magic — laughter, first catches, and memories that still make me smile. John saw a need and quietly made sure those children experienced the joy of the sea.

When my brother-in-law Christian was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor, my wife Ruth was devastated. I reached out to John, and he stepped up without hesitation — helping us raise the funds needed for surgery.

Even after Christian passed, John continued caring for his wife and two young daughters. One day he arrived in Costa Rica captaining a yacht. The very first thing he did was track down the family, buy them a much-needed refrigerator, fill it with food, and hand them extra money. He wrapped them in love and support that never wavered.

John stayed in touch through the years, always checking in with that same generous spirit. When Ruth heard the news of his passing, the pain in her eyes said everything. "He was so good to my mother, to me, and to Christian's family," she said through tears. "He will be sorely missed."

John left a lasting imprint on my heart, on Ruth's, on her family in Costa Rica, and on hundreds of others whose lives he touched with his quiet generosity. He was more than a friend — he was an inspiration, a living example of what it means to make the world better simply by being who you are.

We celebrate you today, John. Thank you for showing us what real kindness looks like. You will live on in every story we share, every life you lifted, and every heart you touched. Rest easy, dear friend. We love you. ❤️
