Big Yellowfin to 70 Pounds | Pacific Voyager 100 Miles Off Point Loma 🎣πŸ”₯

The bigger yellowfin are out there, and Captain Max Neue just put a real number on them.

Max called me off the Pacific Voyager, out of Seaforth Sportfishing, and said yesterday was very good. They have 100 yellowfin on the boat, and 50 of those fish are the ones everybody is looking for, 40 to 70 pounds. They used a short supply of sardines wisely and put 42 of those bigger fish on the sardine. That is the story. Not a pile of rats. Grade fish, about 100 miles from Point Loma.

The bait situation is horrible. Max said they had 10 scoops of sardine, and the rest was 1- to 2-inch anchovy with a little 2- to 3-inch anchovy mixed in. When the sardines are that scarce, you do not waste them on the small ones.

Today they are scratching a day together. Hit and miss, and the fleet is significantly slower overall. Twenty fish for the Pacific Voyager today, 16 passengers on board, and Max thinks they have the most in the fleet. Yesterday was the bite. Today is a grind. That is how these trips go when you are that far outside.

Here is how they are getting bit. Forty- to 50-pound on the flyline for the sardine. Twenty-pound for the anchovy. And 40- to 50-pound with a clear popper.

The clear popper we recommend at Friedman Adventures is the Tuna Riot. Order them at http://tunariot.com. Max was clear on how to throw them on this bite. Slow action. Pop and pause. Pop and pause. When you pause, and that popper is just floating there, that is dead sticking. It feels wrong to leave a lure sitting still, but these fish eat a bait that is not moving all the time. Remember what Max said. Pop and pause.

If you want a shot at this grade of yellowfin, the Pacific Voyager has trips on the board out of Seaforth. Availability moves, so call the landing before you drive down. As listed: a 2-day limited load leaving Monday, October 19 at 8 p.m., back Wednesday, October 21 at 5 p.m., $900, with spots open. Another 2-day limited load Friday, October 30 at 8 p.m., back Sunday, November 1 at 5 p.m., $900. Then a 4-day Wednesday, December 2, $1,900, and 5-day freelance trips December 8 and December 26 at $2,500. Those December 5-days require a passport.
