Bluefin Limits Flowing at Tanner & Cortez Bank – But Brace for Nasty Weather Mid-Week! Dorado Action Heating Up Closer to Home as Backup Plan 🎣🔥

Bluefin tuna fishing has been absolutely fantastic for the boats working Tanner and Cortez Bank. For most boats it’s been easy limits on bluefin ranging from 20 pounds all the way up to over 200 pounds. The best bite in terms of numbers has been at night — 250 to 400 gram jigs have been super effective. The Pacific Voyager with our Friedman Adventures family members Isaac and Ethan Parsell said it was lights-out fishing — as good as it gets!
Having said that, during the daytime is when you can catch some big quality fish, mostly kite fishing, but there’s also been some nice big fish coming on spreader bars too.
But hold on — the weather is about to get really nasty out that way. Wednesday night and Thursday night could be unusable. It’s supposed to really blow out there.
Here are the facts: According to the latest National Weather Service marine forecasts and alerts, a strong low pressure system is moving in and bringing gale-force winds and very steep, dangerous seas across our Southern California offshore waters, including the Tanner and Cortez Bank areas. Gale warnings and small craft advisories are in effect, with sustained winds potentially 20-30+ knots and combined seas building significantly. This could make conditions hazardous or flat-out unusable Wednesday night into Thursday. Always double-check the latest before heading out.
That is not a welcome weather forecast.
One thing that might save the day is some much better fishing south of Point Loma Sportfishing. It should be fishable, and private boaters have been scoring nice dorado, yellowfin tuna, and yellowtail down that way. There’s even been a few marlin around.
The Producer had an early morning dorado today. Yesterday they had 34 dorado, 32 yellowfin tuna, and 4 yellowtail on an overnight trip out of H&M Landing in San Diego — that was their best trip of the year!
Down in this area there are some real spectacles of nature happening right now. You’ve got that beautiful 72° blue water. You’ll see schools of anchovies on the surface as well as big spots of Humboldt squid. Yellowfin tuna feeding on the Humboldt squid that are feeding on the anchovies — you’re literally watching the miracle of the food chain play out in front of your eyes. There’s been yellowfin tuna leaping out of the water, and the kelp bite is starting to cooperate a lot more too.
This might be a viable option for those of you who had your heart set on Tanner and/or Cortez Bank Wednesday and Thursday nights, because it’s going to get nasty out there.
