436 Fish Seized at the Border — What Every Mexico Angler Needs to Know ⚠️🎣

We do a lot of fishing in Mexico — you know that. That’s why I want to share this story straight with you, because it’s a real warning that could save somebody a whole lot of trouble.
On July 1st, California Department of Fish and Wildlife officers Lt. Specialist McLennan and Wildlife Officer Beaky, working with NOAA, were doing inspections at the San Ysidro Port of Entry. They stopped a vehicle coming back from a fishing trip in Mexico and found two large coolers packed with approximately 436 fish — rockfish, lingcod, sheephead, and yellowtail.
Here’s the part that gets people in trouble: Mexico’s rules are clear. Licensed fishermen are only allowed 20 fish per person of these species. These three subjects didn’t have valid Mexico fishing licenses, and officers determined they were bringing the fish back to sell in the United States.
All 436 fish were seized as evidence. Charges are being pursued for taking over 21 daily bag limits, fishing without licenses, and illegally importing the catch into the U.S.
Look, I’m not here to scare anybody — I’m here to keep our Friedman Adventures family out of handcuffs and out of court. The rules exist to protect the resource we all love. When people take way over the limit and try to commercialize it, it hurts the fishery and it hurts the rest of us who fish responsibly.
If you’re heading down to Mexico to fish, make sure you:
• Get your valid Mexico fishing license
• Know the daily bag limits (it’s 20 fish per person for most of these species)
• Only bring back what you’re legally allowed to keep
