41 Quality Yellowtail on the Pursuit – This Line Tip Made All the Difference at Horseshoe Kelp

The local yellowtail bite at Horseshoe Kelp has been excellent this season. It’s been a while since we’ve seen this kind of consistent, quality fishing right here in our backyard. There are days when boat pressure or a short bait supply slows things down, but overall the action has stayed solid.

Today the Pursuit out of 22nd Street Landing in San Pedro put 41 quality yellowtail on the deck. One of the happy anglers was Mike Costello, a longtime Friedman Adventures family fan. Mike shared a key detail: he fished 30-pound fluorocarbon with almost no action. The moment he dropped down to 20-pound fluoro, the yellowtail turned on.

That lighter line made all the difference. It can feel counterintuitive when the fish are solid, but you’ve got to get the bite first. Start light unless the fish clearly show they’re willing to eat heavier fluoro.

Bait was sufficient to get through the day (not overflowing), so tomorrow remains a bit of a question mark. Surface iron is still worth bringing — it’s been producing when the conditions line up.
