Bluefin Tuna Bite Explodes Off San Diego — 100- to 220-Pound Monsters on Fire at Cortez Bank Before Winds Pause the Action… But the Fish Are Still There!

Bluefin Tuna Bite Explodes Off San Diego — 100- to 220-Pound Monsters on Fire at Cortez Bank Before Winds Pause the Action… But the Fish Are Still There!

Just a few days ago, the bluefin tuna bite in Southern California waters was nothing short of spectacular. Fish in the 100- to 220-pound class were showing up in serious numbers. Multi-day boats were posting triple-digit bluefin counts, while others were easily limiting out at two fish per angler per day. The quality was absolutely mind-boggling — these were healthy, hard-fighting tuna that made every trip feel epic.

Then the weather stepped in. Fierce winds on Cortez Bank put a temporary damper on what had been an incredible run. Before the really nasty stuff arrived, however, boats like the Intrepid were still connecting with quality bluefin — including some excellent daytime kite fishing and solid nighttime action. Even as the wind cranked up into downright gnarly conditions, the fleet continued to mark big schools of bluefin in the area.

Those fish never left.

John Garma, a dear friend of the Friedman Adventures family, proved it the other night with a beautiful bluefin estimated at around 120 pounds (give or take) caught on the Intrepid under the lights. This catch is strong evidence that the bluefin are still stacked up and ready to go as soon as conditions allow. The fish didn’t disappear — they’re just waiting for the weather to cooperate.

Latest Cortez Bank Marine Forecast (Thursday through Sunday)

Conditions are looking much more favorable starting Thursday evening. Expect southerly winds around 10 knots with seas in the 3–5 foot range. Friday and the weekend should be even better, with lighter and variable winds and a big swell settling in. It’s shaping up to be exactly what the doctor ordered for getting back on these bluefin in a big way.
