Friedman Adventures on the Estella – Wednesday, July 29 | Hooks Landing, Oxnard

The next Friedman Adventures fishing trip is departing on the Estella out of Hooks Landing in Oxnard, California on Wednesday, July 29.

Check-in is at 5:00 AM with a 6:00 AM departure. We’ll return around 5:00 PM that evening.

Captain Daniel Hadawi wants everyone to dress lightly — it’s going to be hot and sunny. Bring plenty of sunscreen.

Now for the fishing plan: Captain Daniel is looking at starting with Sabiki rigs to snag mackerel, then heading to an area that hasn’t been fished much lately in search of some really big yellowtail. I would definitely bring some heavier tackle (40 lb is a good starting point). If you have Sabiki rigs, bring them.

Even if the yellowtail don’t cooperate, the calico bass fishing has been excellent. Come prepared for that. Bring a few of your favorite plastics in case we run into any bait shortages.

Daniel also recommends bringing at least a couple of light surface irons (something like a Tady 45 or whatever you like throwing). The three colors that have been working well are mint, bird poop, and blue-and-white.

There’s also been some big halibut, big white seabass, excellent whitefish, sheephead, and rockfish action. Weather looks outstanding — very little wind in the forecast — so it should be a classic hot summer day in the Channel Islands.

Recommended Terminal Tackle

• 20–30 lb fluorocarbon (plus some 40 lb for bigger yellowtail)

• ½ oz – 1½ oz sliders

• 6, 10, 12, and 16 oz torpedo sinkers

• J hooks in sizes 4, 2, 1, 1/0, and 4/0
