Thoughts and Prayers – USCG Rescue Operation Off Ensenada

Thoughts and Prayers – USCG Rescue Operation Off Ensenada

This morning the U.S. Coast Guard Sector San Diego is leading a major search-and-rescue effort roughly 120 to 140 miles west of Ensenada after a distress call came in around 1 a.m. A vessel reported it was taking on water with 27 people aboard. When air and surface crews arrived, no boat was in sight and people were in the water.

Sixteen survivors have been rescued so far and flown to San Diego, where San Diego Fire-Rescue teams met them with ambulances and took them to local hospitals. Two are in critical condition and the others have moderate injuries. The search continues for those still unaccounted for. Officials have indicated this appears connected to a human smuggling attempt—the kind of dangerous sea crossing that has claimed too many lives over the years in these waters.

As someone who has spent a lifetime traveling to Mexico, fishing its waters, and building friendships on both sides of the border, this hits close to home. The Mexican people are dear to us at Friedman Adventures. We think of the families waiting for news, the men and women of the Coast Guard and Navy out there right now doing the hard work, and everyone still in the water. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of them.

The ocean can be generous and it can be unforgiving. We see that every time we go out. This is a reminder of how quickly things can turn and why we never take a trip for granted. We will keep an eye on official updates from the Coast Guard as the search continues.

Stay safe out there, everyone. Check http://friedmanadventures.com for the latest fishing reports, Captain’s audios, and everything else we share with the community.
