The Sport King is anchored up at Catalina Island this morning… and they just caught a Dorado!

Dorado are true open-ocean, blue-water fish. They normally hang around floating kelp paddies and debris way offshore — not while a boat is sitting on anchor at the island. That alone makes this catch spectacular. But the Captain says he’s been doing this for over 30 years and has never seen anything like it.

What makes it even more special? It happened right here at Catalina Island. This is classic El Niño behavior. We’re in a strong and strengthening El Niño right now — one that models say could rank among the biggest in decades. The warm water is pushing these hard-fighting, delicious fish north from Baja and beyond. We just dropped that article about the 100-mile stretch of Dorado below the border heading our way… and now they’re already filtering into Catalina and even the Channel Islands.

Add the hurricanes that are developing in the Eastern Pacific right now. Those storms are going to shove even more warm water up the coast — and with it, more warm-water species like Dorado, yellowfin tuna, bigger yellowtail, marlin, and maybe even wahoo before the season is over.
