Kayak Angler Bitten by Mako off Paradise Cove, Pulled Out by a Fisherman 🎣
A kayak angler fishing off Paradise Cove in Malibu this morning hooked a shark, and that shark came back on him. Lifeguards say it was a shortfin mako. He was bitten trying to release it, knocked off the kayak, and bitten again on the leg. Two bites. Lower leg and above the knee.
Here is the part I want every kayak angler to hear. A fisherman on a nearby boat saw it, pulled him out of the water, and got him to the beach. His girlfriend, a retired lifeguard, called 911. Los Angeles County lifeguards and county fire met the boat and put him in an ambulance. No name is out, and we do not have his condition yet. Prayers up for a full recovery.
The beach was not closed. Lifeguards said makos usually stay in deeper water, so they did not shut down the swim zone. Reports put him somewhere from a half-mile to a couple miles off the pier. Times in the first reports do not all match, but it was early Sunday morning, around 7:30 to 8:30.
If you are releasing a shark from a kayak, you are in a phone booth with a set of teeth. Cut the leader. Do not boat that fish if you can help it. And give a nod to the boater who did not hesitate. That is the fishing family at its best.
