Dave Is On Them! 2 Yellowfin Croaker & a Barred Perch in 20 Minutes 🎣

Good morning from Sunset Beach. Fog burned off, the sun came out, and the surf is small. About as good as surf-fishing conditions get around Anderson Street and Pacific Coast Highway.

Dave from Davey’s Lures had only been fishing about 20 minutes and he was already on them. Two yellowfin croaker and one nice barred perch, and the bite started around 7 a.m. He was throwing a Berkley Gulp camo worm. Dave swears by that bait. Says it just works. A chrome Krocodile or a small shiny spoon like a Kastmaster will get it done out here too when the croaker and perch are up in the wash.

I walked out on the sand this morning and the beach is posted. Keep your eyes open. This stretch is potential nesting habitat for olive ridley sea turtles. Two olive ridleys recently nested in Orange County, and scientists say these are the first confirmed olive ridley nests ever documented on the U.S. West Coast. These turtles mostly nest in Mexico, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama. We see them offshore in warm-water years, but they had never been confirmed nesting here until this El Niño 2026 season. Some nest in huge groups. Others come in alone. A nest typically incubates 45 to 60 days, and the females have a habit of coming back to the same beach. So if you are fishing Sunset or Surfside, watch the sand, give them room, and if you see a turtle or tracks, report it. Do not crowd the nest.
