Dorado on the March Toward Southern California! Captain Jeff Lingle Reports Consistent Catches Below Ensenada as El Niño 2026 Keeps Delivering 🎣
Big news from south of the border that has Southern California anglers smiling this morning!
Captain Jeff Lingle, who runs a yacht for the Department of War and takes VIP clients fishing, was 86 miles below the border yesterday catching Dorado. Dorado have been seen from far down the Baja coast all the way up into Southern California waters. This seems to be a byproduct of the massive El Niño we’re experiencing in 2026, and it appears there are more Dorado on the way.
Lingle was in the area just below Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico — roughly 196 miles south of Point Loma Sportfishing — when he had a triple jig strike on Dorado this morning. There was no kelp nearby, just free-swimming Dorado in open water.
He shared that he has caught Dorado across more than 100 miles over the past 24 hours. Lingle was quick to point out that this doesn’t mean there’s a solid 100-mile wall of fish moving straight toward Southern California. But he didn’t travel more than about 15 miles without catching or seeing another Dorado. That kind of consistent action over a long stretch is a very positive sign.
Closer to home, sport boats fishing just 35 miles south of San Diego have already caught Dorado today. Even the full-day boats out of San Diego — the ones that leave in the morning and come back the same day — are scoring Dorado mixed with some yellowfin tuna (though the yellowfin numbers are still building). And the yellowtail are holding strong on the kelp lines, as they often do.
But the real story here is this steady northward flow of Dorado heading toward our local waters as El Niño 2026 continues to amaze. This is definitely a great sign for anglers in Southern California!
