4 Monchong on the Producer?! El Niño 2026 Just Got Weird 🎣🔥

The Producer just came back into H&M Landing from a 2.5-day with a box that made me stop scrolling.

Four.

Monchong — sickle pomfret — almost never show up on SoCal or northern Baja sport boats. These are deep-water fish. They live hundreds of feet down, more of a Hawaiian longline / commercial bycatch fish than something you expect on a 2.5-day out of Point Loma. Last year one on the Legend was news. Four on one trip is not normal.

This is El Niño 2026 doing what strong Niños do. Warm water has already shoved wahoo into San Diego range, sierra mackerel onto the rocks in Ensenada, extra dorado and yellowfin closer to home. Monchong like warmer water and they live deep. When the ocean heats up like this, the oddballs start showing in places they don’t belong. Four of them on the Producer is not a coincidence.
