Wide Open Yellowtail at the Coronado Islands! San Diego Boat 124, Mission Belle 70 🔥🎣

The Coronado Islands are producing some wide-open yellowtail action, and it’s been an incredible several days in a row now for anglers fishing there.

Today the San Diego out of Seaforth Sportfishing put 124 yellowtail in the bag, while the Mission Belle with 14 anglers scored 70 yellowtail. These fish are ranging from 8 pounds to over 20 pounds.

One of the best parts of this bite is that the yellowtail have been eager to eat yo-yo irons. That’s especially important with the continuing bait headaches of this El Niño 2026. Some days all you get are pinhead anchovies, other days it’s all big sardines, sometimes a mix, and sometimes there’s not much bait at all. Bring both surface and yo-yo irons, but the yo-yo has been the most consistent producer.

Private boats working the same area have also been into lots of yellowtail. It can be tough to locate a school at times, but once you get on them the fishing has been absolutely phenomenal. Add in the flat-calm, gorgeous seas we had today and it was a day to remember.

Important reminder for anyone heading to the Coronado Islands:

These are Mexican waters, so you need:

• A valid U.S. Passport Book or Passport Card (required for the Mexican tourist visa / FMM)

• A Mexican sportfishing license (required for everyone on the boat, even non-anglers)

• A Biosphere Bracelet (also called the ecology or biosphere card) because the Coronados are a protected biosphere reserve

Most landings include the FMM and biosphere bracelet in the ticket price; the Mexican fishing license is usually additional. Check with your landing when you book.

With the weekend coming, expect a lot of boats (and floaters) at the islands. That extra pressure could have an effect on the bite — only time will tell. For now, though, the yellowtail fishing at the Coronado Islands is excellent.
