Albacore Show Up Early Off Fort Bragg — And They’re Close

Avid albacore fisherman and Fort Bragg resident Frank Horne is more than jubilant right now. The owner of Tight Lines Custom Rods told Friedman Adventures that good numbers of albacore are being taken 12 to 18 miles offshore of Noyo Harbor.

Even better — some fish have been caught as close as 7 miles. One bluefin tuna was also taken in the mix.

According to Darren Nielsen, owner of the Noyo Fishing Center and the charter boat Kyndall Lynn, some boats are coming in with as many as 25 albacore. The fish are running 8 to 25 pounds.

Horne said the albacore are a few weeks early this year. Last year they stayed around and bit all the way into November.

As usual up on the North Coast, weather is the big factor. Yesterday was flat calm — the best day of the year so far. Today it’s blowing 25 knots out of the south and muggy. Tomorrow looks fishable again.

Great news for anyone who likes chasing longfins. The albacore have shown up early off Fort Bragg and they’re within reach.
