Magnitude 7.7 Earthquake Strikes Off the Coast of Indonesia – Tsunami Warning Issued

A powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck early this morning off the northern coast of Flores Island in eastern Indonesia, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake hit at a shallow depth of about 10 kilometers, roughly 68 km north-northwest of the city of Ende in East Nusa Tenggara province. Several strong aftershocks followed, including magnitudes in the 5.6 to 6.1 range.

Indonesia’s meteorology agency (BMKG) issued a tsunami warning for parts of East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara, South Sulawesi, and Southeast Sulawesi, urging residents near the coast to move to higher ground. Minor tsunami waves have been detected at several locations, with reported heights under one meter so far.

No major destructive tsunami has been confirmed at this time, and international warning centers have stated there is no threat to Australia, India, or Hawaii. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as damage and casualty reports begin to come in.
