Premier Half-Day Wahoo at H&M Landing! El Niño 2026 Goes Local 🎣🔥
That’s a half-day fish. Let that sink in.
The Premier out of H&M Landing in San Diego is the boat you take when you’ve got a morning or an afternoon and you want kelp-bed action — bonito, bass, barracuda, yellowtail if you’re lucky. Those trips work Imperial Beach to the Point Loma kelp. They are not supposed to come home with a wahoo.
Today they did.
One wahoo on a half-day. I don’t have an official ledger that says “this is the third time in landing history,” but I’ve been around this water a long time, and you can count local half-day wahoo on one hand and still have fingers left. Wahoo are a long-range and multi-day fish. They live in that warm Baja current. Half-day boats don’t even list them on the ticket. When one shows up on the Premier, something bigger is happening.
That something is El Niño 2026.
The tropical water is walking north. Fish that used to make you book a three-day or a week in Mexico are showing inside the local range. Our friend Jeff Lino, who runs a yacht, was 200 miles out today and called in huge schools of yellowfin tuna and dorado — all of it pointed this way. The Excalibur checked in from day one of a three-day with 18 wahoo. Eighteen. On the first day. H&M’s own board has been lighting up with wahoo on the Horizon, Old Glory, Little G, Ranger 85. Marlin are everywhere. A giant blue marlin just came over the rail on another San Diego boat this week. The ocean is not acting like the ocean we grew up with.
So when the Premier puts a wahoo on the deck on a half-day, that is not a random fish. That is the bite moving into the neighborhood.
Hats off to the Premier crew and every angler who got a hand on that fish. That’s a fish you’ll talk about for years. If you’re sitting on the fence about getting on the water, this is the year. Half-day, three-quarter, overnight, multi-day — the fleet is loaded and the water is alive.
