Tropical Storm Norbert Forms in the East Pacific — El Niño, the Hurricane Forecast, and What It Means for SoCal Fishing

What the models actually show

NHC Advisory 5 / Discussion 5 (2:00 p.m. PDT Sept. 10):

• Now: 16.5N 120.5W, 45 mph

• Sunday afternoon: near 18.0N 132.4W, ~75 mph hurricane

• Monday: still heading west near 18.4N 136.1W

Steering is a ridge north of the storm. Official NHC track and the corrected consensus (HCCA) keep it offshore. No watches for Mexico or California.

A second disturbance southwest of southwestern Mexico has a high (~70–80%) chance of becoming a depression early next week — also forecast to go west-northwest, not into SoCal.

Why the East Pacific is this busy

Yes — El Niño. A strong-to-super event is in place and still strengthening. That pattern supercharges the East Pacific and shuts the Atlantic down (this year hit the Atlantic peak with zero Atlantic hurricanes). Fourteen named East Pacific storms already. That is the classic Niño fingerprint.

Warm water toward Southern California

Norbert itself will not “flush” the coast. The pattern will.

• El Niño + the existing marine heat wave

• Heat now showing up deeper off SoCal on Scripps gliders

• A Kelvin wave working up the Mexican coast, expected in Southern California around early October

That is the real warm-water pump. Fishermen’s instinct is correct; just don’t hang it on this one westward storm.

Fish and visitors — checked

Already documented or scientifically expected in this warm year:

• Striped marlin, yellowfin, dorado, wahoo, yellowtail

• Pacific sierra mackerel — tropical; the Ensenada El Mosquito catch this year is exactly an El Niño stray

• Sea turtles (leatherbacks already use Central California / Monterey in some years; olive ridleys and greens are the more tropical push)

Yellow-bellied sea snakes: possible, rare, venomous. A handful of California records since 1972, clustered in strong El Niño years (including SoCal beaches in 2015–16). Do not handle. Give it space and tell lifeguards. Not a daily beach animal — a lost tropical stray.
