Tropical Storms & Hurricanes Stacking Up in the Eastern Pacific — Warm Water & Exotic Fish Pushing Toward Northern Baja & Southern California! 🌊🎣🔥

Hey Friedman Adventures family!

Man, the Eastern Pacific has been on absolute fire this season. We’re seeing an incredible run of tropical storms and systems spinning out there, many of them tracking or sending energy up toward northern Baja and Southern California. Right now we’ve got Tropical Storm Iselle (around 70 mph) several hundred miles west of the southern tip of Baja, Tropical Storm Julio getting absorbed into it, and more systems in the pipeline. This follows a busy stretch that already gave us storms like Fausto and major Hurricane Genevieve earlier.

These systems are pumping long-period south swells our way. For Southern California, the National Weather Service has elevated surf and High Rip Current Risk for Wednesday (and potentially into Thursday) on the south-facing beaches. Expect 3–5 foot surf with sets to 6–7 feet in spots from Orange County down through northern San Diego County. Not a full-blown high surf warning everywhere, but those rips will be strong — stay sharp if you’re in the water, keep an eye on the kids, and respect the conditions. Life-threatening currents are no joke.

Here’s the part that gets every fisherman’s attention: a lot of us believe all this tropical activity helps flush warmer water and exotic species farther north. The storms stir things up, push warm currents our way, and suddenly you’ve got fish showing up in places they don’t normally hang. We’ve already seen it this year — striped marlin caught as far north as the state of Washington! A 151-pounder off Ilwaco set a new Washington state record just a couple weeks ago. That’s wild. When the Pacific is this active, warm-water species can ride the currents all the way up the coast.

Keep watching the water temps, the current charts, and those morning briefings. This kind of pattern can bring yellowtail, dorado, white seabass action, and yes… even the occasional billfish into areas we usually only dream about. Stay tuned to the boats out of Ensenada, the Channel Islands, San Diego, and the local landings — things can get interesting fast when the tropics are this busy.
