Title John Bretza’s Fish of the Year: 75–80lb Cubera on an Okuma Makaira 2-Speed

It had been a tough day on Arrecho Sportfishing out of Puerto Vallarta. Not much in the box. The kind of day that wears on a crew. Nobody on the boat said die. They kept working, kept the baits in the water, and stayed with it.

Then John Bretza, Vice President of Product Development at Okuma, hooked up on a live skipjack. He made the catch on an Okuma Makaira 2-speed. What came up was a Cubera snapper estimated at 75 to 80 pounds, and John called it his fish of the year.

He earned that name. John fought hard. By the end he was tired and a little dehydrated, which is why he was asking for water, but he never gave the fish an inch he did not have to give. When that Cubera finally came to color, everybody on board was cheering. Friedman Adventures was right there to see him conquer it.

A quiet day. A crew that refused to quit. One live skipjack. One Okuma Makaira 2-speed. One dream Cubera. Fish of the year.
