California Barracuda

Sphyraena argentea

Toothy, fast, and a blast on light line

Barracuda run the kelp lines and bait schools all summer, slashing through surface bait and chewing anything shiny. They are one of the most exciting light-tackle targets we have and often show up mixed with bonito and yellowtail.

Season: April through October
Best bite: Early morning on a boiling bait school
Typical size: 3–8 lb, up to 12 lb
Where we fish: Kelp edges, bait balls and hard structure from the beach out to the islands

How we catch them

Casting surface irons and spoons
Fly-lining live sardine on wire or heavy fluorocarbon
Fast-retrieved jigs through breaking fish

15–25 lb outfit
Short wire or 40 lb fluorocarbon bite leader

Captain's tips

Wind fast — barracuda chase speed.
Watch your hands at the rail; their teeth are razors.
Bleed and ice immediately for the best eating.

Table quality

Good fresh — best grilled or smoked the same day, not a keeper for the freezer.
