Bulldogs of the kelp with world-class fillets
Sheephead live in the rocks and kelp, crushing crustaceans with heavy teeth. Hooked, they dive straight for structure, which makes stopping a big one a genuine challenge — and the reward is thick, sweet white meat.

- Rocky reef and kelp from 30 to 150 feet, Catalina and San Clemente especially
How we catch them
- Dropper loop with whole squid or shrimp
- Live bait fished tight to structure
Tackle we use
- 30–50 lb outfit with a stout rod
- 4–10 oz sinkers
- 2/0–4/0 hooks

- Live sardine
Captain's tips
- Lock the drag early or they will rock you.
- Whole squid keeps the small fish off your hook.
- Big bulls are old fish — consider releasing the giants.
Table quality
Excellent — firm, sweet white fillets, superb grilled or in tacos.
